Toddler Update: 2 Years

2 year old milestones, baby gap style, toddler milestones, baby outfits, baby update, mom life baby update, toddler updateJust like that, I find myself writing a toddler update to document Arya turning two years old this month! We have a two year old — letting that sink in has been SO surreal. The last time we talked about toddler milestones, she was 20 months and since then even more has changed. Last time I mostly shared how much I personally had learned as a new mom of a toddler, but this time I’d like to actually talk about Arya! A friend of mine told me to be prepared for how quickly the growth stages fly by between year one and two and she couldn’t have given more accurate advice. These days, Arya is a walking, talking, personality who surprises us every day with the things she knows!

I’ve shared a few throwback pics on Instagram stories, but essentially she looks and acts just like I did as a little. Though she does have a TON more personality! Some of her favorite things:

  • Anything to do with the ocean! Watching Finding Dory, Bubble Guppies, and Finding Nemo, etc.
  • Choosing her own breakfast in the morning. Yogurt and strawberries are always a request!
  • Getting herself dressed (or at least trying to put on her own pants, socks and shoes).
  • Sneaking into my makeup bag while I’m getting ready and trying to help me get dolled up!
  • Learning to play with the dog and give him treats.
  • “Cooking” meals in her mini kitchen (and serving them up too!)
  • Dancing to literally ANY music that comes on. So far her moves consist of a silly spin and really quick clapping lol
  • Singing. SO much singing! ABCs, Baa-Baa Black Sheep, basically all of the nursery rhymes. I’m so impressed with how much she can retain and remember on her own!
  • Counting and saying the alphabet! She can recite and recognize the entire alphabet and her numbers up to 14. This still amazes me!

She’s becoming such an intelligent, caring, and outgoing little person and I can’t wait to see who she becomes! On the flip side, this milestone also brings tantrums, tears, and ALL the toddler feelings. We’re quickly learning that a majority of Arya’s spirited frustrations start during transition. She likes to know what’s coming, she loves to communicate and she wants to have a say in almost everything! I’ll never be the parent that lets a tiny human run the household, but I am learning to better communicate to her what’s happening in the world around her. We so easily get into the pattern of just doing, going, rushing — it’s easy to forget that she’s apart of this too, especially now that she’s able to talk and think. As a family, we’re turning into quite the well oiled machine, and it feels great to be able to say we’re no longer newbies!

It’s been a LONG journey with ups and downs and many emotional struggles for us both! It took us 3 tries but we’re finally in a center that we all enjoy. Arya’s bond with her teacher and classmates is something I really cherish! While I’ll never say that it gets easier to be away from her each day, it does give me peace of mind that she’s enjoying her time spent at school. She’s become quite the social butterfly, and the updates that I receive throughout the day always show her thoroughly engaged in daily activities. She gets to dance, and sing, and have circle time and I have no less than a million of her art projects already. One of the questions I get the most from other moms is about how to balance being a working mom. Honestly — it’s the hardest question to give advice for!

Essentially, there is no easy answer or easy advice. Instead, I think that as each day passes you become more and more okay with the sacrifices you have to make as a parent. You rely more on your community of other moms, even if just to vent. You wholeheartedly commit to being as present as you can, when you can. Some days are going to be amazing — drop-off runs smoothly, you’re killing it at work, and your child has a happy day in class. Other days are going to be the exact opposite — your child is clingy because they miss you, they won’t take a nap, and at pick-up they take their frustration out on you. I find myself struggling between the two at the moment, especially as Arya develops into a little girl and is able to fully express herself. It has me really evaluating the ways that I spend my time, and as a result, our family is in the midst of making some changes to help us all live a more balanced life.2 year old milestones, baby gap style, toddler milestones, baby outfits, baby update, mom life baby update, toddler updateSo what’s next? A lot. Not to tease but keep an eye out for some major changes coming to The Mom Life soon. I started this endeavor to really build a resource community for moms and it’s all finally coming to fruition. Keep an eye out for updates as we lead up to some exciting news in May! Until then, we have a few other things at the top of the list to accomplish this year:

  • Celebrate Arya’s 2nd birthday at the Long Island Aquarium
  • Start Arya in ballet
  • Plan a summer family vacation
  • Get started on baby #2
  • Turn 30!
  • Potty training and Pre-K prep

Stay tuned! 🙂
