I’ve been talking about the babyhood to toddlerhood transition a lot lately, so today’s post touches on dealing with toddler skin care! And it features one of my new favorite brands — Mustela! Admittedly, baby skin care is not something I ever gave much thought to, until recently discovering that Arya has sensitive skin. Did you know that a baby’s skin is still developing until the age of two and is extremely vulnerable during that time? Long story short, I kept noticing random red rashes and irritations popping up on her face, arms, legs and back. My initial suspicions were teething or new food allergies but after zeroing in on each scenario, I discovered that neither were the culprit. Curious about your child’s skin type? Find out what it might be here!
What finally tipped me off that the irritant was a product we were using is that the rashes improved only after long periods in between baths (and LOTS of coconut oil)! I also had a sneaking suspicion, since I have my own personal childhood experience with eczema — aka atopic dermatitis. Eczema can be caused by several factors like exposure to extreme heat or cold, dust, sweat, allergens, fragrance, soaps, and detergents. Most of the toddler skin care brands we use at home (Honest Co, Seventh Generation & Babyganics) are overall safe and gentle — and this is by no means diminishing any of them. I just realized that not EVERYTHING made by each company is going to work for my child’s unique skin. With that knowledge, I brought my concerns to our pediatrician who advised that I had likely caught a developing case of eczema just early enough! The remedy? A holistic approach to protection and hydration. Don’t get me wrong, coconut oil works wonders but it can’t do everything.
I wanted to find a line of skin care products that would be sensitive enough for Arya, while also allowing us to heal and improve some of the damage that was already done. Mustela’s Daily Care for Very Sensitive Skin is exactly what we needed — hypoallergenic, completely safe to use from birth on, full of plant-based ingredients and free of parabens, phthalates and alcohol. The full line including the Soothing Cleansing Gel, Soothing Moisturizing Body Lotion and the Soothing Moisturizing Face Cream contains schizandra berries and avocado to help protect and soothe delicate skin! The berry extract works to soothe inflammation and redness while the avocado targets healing to improve the appearance of skin.
We’ve been using the entire line of Mustela products for Very Sensitive Skin and I’m so excited to share that Arya’s skin is already improving! The Soothing Moisturizing Face Cream is my favorite — I have even used it myself a couple of mornings. Her cheeks are healing more and more each day and her forehead is already clear! I feel so much better knowing that we can continue to have fun in the bath and carry on with our nighttime routine without worrying what damage might be done to her skin. Thinking you might have a baby or toddler of your own with sensitive skin? Don’t worry — it’s not always an issue they’re born with and can develop out of nowhere as they grow! I fully recommend reading through these tips here on what to look for, before talking to your pediatrician and finding a toddler skin care routine that you love too.
