Barre3 is one of the things I got asked about A TON last year, so I thought today I’d share why I love it so. I started my practice at barre3 Lakewood Ranch a few months after Arya was born, and as a new mom, it was life changing! I could literally gush for days about the Lakewood Ranch team and how their community helped me find balance. Which only made complete sense because finding balance is at the core of everything at barre3. It started with the workouts: every barre3 class works strategically to build strength and flexibility for optimal body balance and improved posture. During a time when things were quite frankly out of whack, it became an essential way to focus on re-establishing a healthy mommy mind-body connection. And because so many studios offer childcare, I was able to bring Arya with me most of the time! Each barre3 class is a heart-pumping mix of athleticism and grace, truly designed for everyone. No really — that’s sort of the beauty of it all! In any given studio you’ll find pregnant moms, people recovering from injury, newbies starting to workout for the first time, and seasoned athletes. But how could so many different people, all on such different fitness journeys enjoy the same class? I asked myself the same walking in as a recovering postpartum woman — after childbirth my core was shot (diastasis recti, anyone?) and my lower body was taking a long time to heal. How was I going to hang? Luckily barre3 doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to exercise. Instead, every instructor empowers you to modify postures when needed and develop body awareness for lasting results. So fast forward many, many months and classes later and my body is forever changed! So much so, that this year I started doing it at home! Finding time to workout is one of the things that will never be the same for me now that I’m a mom. It’s hard, it’s frustrating, and it’s easy to quit when you can’t get into a good rhythm anyway. It’s something I talk about with other new moms all the time, and it’s unique to each circumstance, but annoying all the same. Working mom, stay at home mom, a little bit of both mom? I say this to you all — I know it’s not easy to take care of yourself when you’re busy saving the world for your tiny human(s) every day but PLEASE try to take at least 10 minutes for you. Keyword: try. Even if that looks different each day, make it a non-negotiable! Going back to my full-time job at ClassPass certainly makes me more mindful of my health and fitness (try it out for only $19!), but for the days when I need my barre3 fix and can’t quite make it to studio, there’s barre3 online! There’s a new workout every week but you also gain access to 100’s of recipes, instructor support, and exclusive online events with wellness experts. So whether you have 10 minutes, 30 minutes or a full hour, you can always unlock the studio from your living room (hotel room, beach, business trip) — anywhere! More than anything though, I feel capable and strong and beautiful and that’s barre3. Sure, I skip my workouts sometimes and I let stress get the best of me, but that’s never been enough to make me quit completely. There’s this quote I love that barre3 founder Sadie Lincoln wrote once:
“Perfection is boring, a dead end. Progress is alive and full of potential. It means we’re always learning, and that’s more rewarding than picture-perfect abs will ever be.”
Barre3 taught me how to trust my body again after childbirth, it gave me a friendly community of fierce rockstars, and even as I navigate new mom life, it’s something I can actually stick with. If you’re interested in trying it out too, find your local studio here or snag anytime access to barre3 online here. Enjoy, mamas!
